If Arnold Schwarzenegger used it in his prime, you know it’s got to be good. I’m talking about none other than Dianabol, of course. It’s now well known that Dbol was one of Arnie’s two favorite anabolic steroids (the other simply being testosterone).
But if I have to state the obvious, you’re not going to look like Schwarzenegger did in his prime just by running a few Dianabol cycles. That guy worked HARD for years and years. And Dbol was just one tool to help him get there.

What is Dianabol?
You have heard of Dianabol if you’re interested in or just curious about anabolic steroids.
Dbol is the AAS that’s perhaps talked about more than any other besides plain old testosterone. For most bodybuilders, Dianabol is THE steroid we want to try above all others. With so many incredible photos of Dianabol’s physiques out there, who wouldn’t want a piece of the action?
History and Overview
Dbol is one of the oldest anabolic steroids, created in the mid-1950s. Dianabol is the most well-known brand name for the anabolic steroid Methandrostenolone. In fact, Dianabol is really the only term we ever use for this steroid, along with simply calling it Dbol or D-bol. It was used for a short time medically as an androgen replacement therapy, but more effective AAS were soon developed for that purpose.
With the extent of liver toxicity that Dianabol can cause becoming evident to medical professionals, Dbol would never remain in medical use because it wasn’t suited for longer-term clinical usage and was withdrawn from approved medical uses in most countries. However, bodybuilders didn’t take long to catch on to Dianabol’s benefits. This led to Dbol becoming a favored steroid for bodybuilders of the “golden era” throughout the 1970s, thanks to its ability to quickly promote massive gains in muscle.
Mechanism of Action
Dianabol is an oral anabolic steroid derived from testosterone. Despite Dbol being based on the testosterone hormone, its speed, and potency of effects are significantly more potent than testosterone. Dianabol was designed to have reduced androgenic activity compared to testosterone, with an androgenic rating of around 60, while having a much higher anabolic effect that can potentially be twice that of testosterone.
As you would know, Dianabol is an oral steroid. This means it passes through the liver (causing some hepatotoxicity) and starts taking effect quicker than most injectables. At its core, Dianabol promotes anabolism, muscle growth, and strength gains like testosterone does – it does it more robustly. In particular, these processes are critical to the mechanism of action of Dianabol and the reasons why we love using it:
- Protein synthesis
- Nitrogen retention
- Glycogenolysis
While protein synthesis and nitrogen retention are generally well understood, fewer people know about Dianabol’s glycogenolysis activity and why it’s so beneficial: Increased muscular energy as Dianabol promotes the increased conversion of glycogen into glucose.
When you’re training at high intensity, glycogenolysis is critical for ATP. ATP is what your body uses for the contraction of the muscles. Lifting weights at your maximum intensity depletes your stores of ATP.
With Dianabol able to increase glycogenolysis to resynthesize your muscles’ store of ATP, you’re able to continue with muscle contractions – essentially allowing you to lift for longer. When this is combined with drastically increased nitrogen retention and protein synthesis, it becomes clearer why Dianabol is such a powerhouse steroid.
Effects of Dianabol (Benefits)
Dianabol’s big benefits center on two main things: strength and mass. That’s why we use Dbol. There’s no slow and steady with Dianabol, either. It’s all about getting big and doing it fast. Here are the benefits and effects you can expect to see (and feel!) with Dianabol:
Mass Gains
Everyone uses Dianabol to gain mass, gain a lot of it, and gain it quickly. You know it will work fast with the possibility of running Dianabol for only four weeks. No other steroid will have you put on so much weight in such a short time – but beware that blasting Dianabol at high doses will almost certainly have a fair amount of that weight being water.
All Dbol users should be aware that only some of the weight gained will be muscle, and this is what you aim to keep after your cycle – resulting in a drop of overall weight as water is shed.
Strength Gains
Dbol is one of the very best strength-boosting AAS. Expect to see strength gains within your first two or three days. Personal records are easy to break through on your first Dbol cycle; you’ll feel like an absolute monster with the weight you can now lift.
Fast Recovery
All AAS will speed up your muscle recovery, and with Dbol’s effects on protein synthesis, you can expect your regular recovery times to halve or even better – getting you back to training sooner with less downtime.
Pumps and Fullness
Dianabol users will get some fantastic pumps. Some of us find back pumps become an issue, principally at higher doses. Once you start feeling those pumps in the gym (and outside of it), it’s a great sign that your Dbol is working as it should be – and it feels incredible.
Joints and Bones
A less well-known benefit of Dbol is its ability to repair and strengthen joints. You’ll need this with the increased weight you’ll be lifting, and it also contributes to the all-important acceleration of recovery. But if water retention becomes overwhelming, this can hurt joints, and you’ll lose out on this advantage of Dianabol.
Dianabol Dosing and Administration
Dianabol is an AAS where there’s little room to move on dosing. Even an increase of 5mg daily can take your side effects to a point where it becomes challenging to mitigate.
I always say it’s worth sacrificing a few pounds in gains to get those side effects under control with a slightly lower dose. The optional dose for YOU will be different than for me, but 40-50mg is where a lot of men find the best balance.
Doses
Dianabol was long ago stopped being used as a medical drug due to its toxic effects on the liver. Dosages when it was used for this purpose were typically up to 10mg per day for men, and women were sometimes prescribed 2.5mg per day. Here’s a general guide to the Dianabol’s bodybuilding doses for different experience levels:
Beginner
Although a mighty AAS, beginner steroid users can still usually tolerate it well at lower doses, and 15mg can provide excellent results (despite what some people might say). As long as you’ve got high-quality Dbol, a 15mg daily dose will give a fantastic introduction to this steroid with manageable sides.
Intermediate
Taking it to the next level at 30mg daily will begin more severe water retention, but the muscle and strength gains will start coming on thick and fast. Yes, other sides will also increase at this level, but the majority of men can tolerate 30mg of Dbol well.
Advanced
50mg is where many of us will maximize our Dianabol dose, but as always, some will push the limits further and go for 75mg or even 100mg per day. That is an extreme dose of Dbol, and you can expect severe water retention and the associated risk of high blood pressure and liver toxicity. This blasting at high doses would not want to be done for more than a few weeks maximum.
Dosing Schedule, Half-life, and Cycle Length
Dianabol’s half-life is very short: anywhere from just three hours up to six hours. So how should you dose Dbol throughout the day?
- I like to split it into two or three – depending on how much I take. Even then, it’s difficult to keep blood levels steady.
- The other option is a once-daily administration taken an hour or two before working out to maximize the effects while you train.
Dianabol is one of the only AAS men who can run as a sole compound without a testosterone base if you do things properly. Dianabol IS suppressive, but at a moderate dose and short cycles, it’s possible to run Dbol alone and not suffer from low testosterone. It’s the estrogen crash of suppressive AAS that causes the problems for men and Dianabol aromatizing into a somewhat weaker version of estrogen.
At 20mg daily or more on a Dbol-only cycle, you can introduce an AI, and if you dose it correctly, you should be able to control suppression-related side effects. Arimidex dosed at 0.125mg to 0.25mg taken twice weekly is often successfully used in this Dbol-only cycle strategy.
Cycle length, regardless of whether it’s Dbol only or a stack, I always limit use to 6 weeks. I’ve heard of guys using Dianabol for longer cycles, but you better watch out for your liver values closely.
Likely Results
Most guys going into a Dianabol cycle will, at a minimum, be looking to gain 20 lbs in mass. If you’re taking in enough calories daily to support your gains, enough muscle mass can be built to gain significant weight even once water weight is lost post-cycle.
Once you start stacking with testosterone and other AAS compounds like Deca, you can see gains in the 30 lbs realm. Despite the lost fluid weight, the lean mass you can keep on will still be more than what we can achieve with just about any other steroid.
Strength gains will be through the roof (Dbol is, after all, one of THE premier strength-boosting AAS). You should notice a significant strength increase before week 3. Benching 30 lbs more by week three is quickly done, and those pumps! As long as you can avoid lower back pumps, the pumps on Dianabol are one of the best things about this AAS, in my opinion. Expect excellent muscle fullness and a huge blown-up look that WILL get attention – whether you want it or not!
Dianabol Cycles
Dianabol cycles are all about strength and mass gains, making this AAS possibly the most popular off-season bulking steroid. It has two excellent strategic uses in a cycle as well:
- As a kickstarter – to start making gains very quickly in the first 4 to 6 weeks of the cycle, then continuing with other AAS.
- To bust through plateaus – avoid stagnation of results in the middle of a cycle by running Dbol for four weeks to break your plateau and continue your progress.
The multiple ways we can use Dbol will impact your results to an extent, but one thing is sure: Dianabol delivers massive gains regardless of where you place it in the cycle.

Dianabol Cycle for Men
Here’s an idea of what to expect: Men using Dbol will see weight gains like no other steroid. 20lbs? That’s the low end. Think 30 lbs and even more. Expect to lose much of it – up to 80% of that weight – once you stop Dbol. But if you’ve eaten and worked out right, lean gains of 15 lbs or more can be maintained.
There are thousands (millions even) of enthusiastic comments shared about Dianabol. People get excited about using this steroid and for good reasons! Just a few of the positive reviews I’ve seen are:
- “Pumps at the gym are insane.“
- “Increases volume and strength like crazy.“
- “Very high levels of energy!”
- “I gained nearly 30lbs in 3 to 4 weeks.”
With something as powerful as Dianabol, there will always be negative comments and experiences guys are talking about. But these won’t necessarily stop someone from using Dbol – we know what to expect, and you roll with it.
Something a lot of guys touch on is how family and friends notice the drastic body changes. Having your body blow up in a short time and things like “moon face” developing – men who want to go under the radar should know that Dianabol isn’t letting that happen.
Back pumps are a common complaint from men. This is often at the higher dosage range, and even when you know it could happen, it’s still a bit of a shock to experience it.
Dianabol Cycle for Women
With a lower androgenic rating than testosterone, it would appear on paper at least that Dianabol is usable by women with a lower risk of virilization. But despite this, virilizing side effects are very likely for females who use Dianabol. It can come as a surprise then that many women do choose to use Dbol at low doses, and in many cases, they enjoy its benefits immensely.
In other cases, there are women who report purchasing Anavar, having it tested, and discovering it is, in fact, Dianabol. In these cases, Dbol might be unknowingly used, and it will provide women with a VERY different experience from Anavar.
Most women who run Dianabol do so for just a few weeks. At week 3, side effects like acne and water retention can become challenging to manage. Females starting at very low doses of 2.5mg (which was once used in clinical studies) can still see weight gain well beyond what can be achieved with Anavar, and women love the strength boost that Dbol provides. Some of the positive things women are saying include:

Dianabol vs. Other PEDs
Dianabol stands on its own and will be the go-to off-season fast-acting bulking steroid for most of us. But it’s always a good idea to compare with other AAS because Dbol won’t always be the best option for your goals.
More so, I would like to know how different AAS will bring additional benefits to a stack. It’s also interesting to compare Dbol to other oral steroids as we can see how unique it is (with most other orals being dry-cutting steroids).
Dianabol vs. Anavar
Anavar is an excellent cutting steroid, and it can promote some lean gains but nothing comparable to Dbol.
Being an oral steroid, you’d expect Anavar to be as liver toxic as Dbol, but in fact, it’s pretty mild in this regard – but can cause more stress to the kidneys. Anavar will dry you out and give you some incredible vascularity and muscle hardness, quite the opposite of a Dianabol physique.
Rarely would you want to stack these two oral AAS – but running Anavar for a short cycle after a short cycle of Dbol could help dry out your physique, keeping in mind that it’s wise to limit the length of time you take any oral steroids.
Dianabol vs. Deca-Durabolin
Deca is also a classic old-school steroid. Both Deca and Dbol were used regularly by golden-era bodybuilders, and both are still at the top of the list of popular steroids today.
Deca is not a dry compound by any means but will typically cause less water retention than Dbol. Deca’s side effects are easier to manage, but it’s so important to consider individual responses. Some guys don’t like Deca and do better with Dianabol.
Using NPP instead of Deca (both Nandrolone) can give you results at a similar speed to Dbol, but again, those size and strength gains will be a little less extreme than a Dianabol cycle.

Stacking Dianabol
Dianabol is what we can confidently call a bulking AAS. It’s well known that Dbol was a core component of off-season bulking in the golden age of bodybuilding back in the 1970s, with fluid retention in the off-season not being a big deal (and those guys mostly kept the dosage relatively low as well).
Yes, Dbol can be utilized in a cutting or recomp cycle, but better options are available… One way this can work is to use Dianabol for a short time at the start of the cycle, then finish off with a drying AAS to rid your body of water before a contest.
Any cycle where putting on maximum body weight is your priority is one you should think about running Dianabol in. I want to focus on some incredible Dianabol stacks where you’re using Dbol as part of a comprehensive cycle that includes other AAS that bring in their own additional benefits (and side effects).
Dianabol is very often used as a kickstart compound. And why wouldn’t you? It’s the perfect way to kick off a longer cycle and start making massive gains fast before other compounds take full effect. Here are just a few of my favorite Dianabol stacks:
Dianabol + Testosterone (Bulking Stack)
This is the most straightforward stack we can do with Dianabol, but don’t be fooled by its simplicity: this potent bulking cycle can deliver immense results if you approach your diet and training right.
You can choose any testosterone ester according to your preference, but I usually go with Testosterone Enanthate. It will take a little longer to kick in, but that’s where Dbol shines by kicking off this stack excellently and fast with a bang for the first six weeks.

Results
This stack is all about building as much size as possible, and Dianabol is going to add exceptional mass quickly in the first half of the cycle. Gains will then slow down to a steadier pace as testosterone takes over, and you should be able to keep water retention controlled with a good diet by limiting the Dianabol dose to 25mg. Gains of 20lbs are well within possibility with this cycle.
PCT
Nolvadex: 40mg/day for weeks 1-3, then 20mg/day for week 4.
If using Testosterone Enanthate or Cypionate, wait two weeks after your last injection before starting PCT.
Dianabol + Deca-Durabolin + Testosterone (Bulking Stack)
This is a viral bulking cycle but one where you’ll want to be a more experienced AAS user because Deca can introduce a bunch of different side effects here. Again, use a testosterone ester that you prefer. Still, I go with Testosterone Cypionate for its twice-weekly injections (and your Deca injections can even be combined with the Test ones for convenience).

Adding Deca to an already potent combo of Dbol and Test will make gains even more substantial on this cycle. 20lbs to 30lbs is a very reasonable target, and much of the gains will be made in the first few weeks. Dianabol begins on the third week to give Deca time to kick in, so all the AAS are working together in this awesome off-season combo that was made famous by Arnie himself.
PCT
- First ten days post-cycle: HCG 500iu daily
- Week 2-4: Nolvadex 40mg/day
- Week 5: Nolvadex 20mg/day
Optionally, you can stop using Deca at week ten if you want to begin PCT two weeks after the cycle ends – Deca is long-lasting. PCT will not necessarily restore testosterone levels fully. Some users find testosterone cruising longer term or ongoing TRT is required after using Deca-Durabolin.
Dianabol + Trenbolone (Bulking/Recomp Stack)
This is one of the hardcore stacks you can do, with Tren being an advanced AAS that you’ll want to have experience with before stacking it because its side effects alone can be extreme. This stack won’t only help you gain more mass, but Tren can assist in drying you out from any water weight put on from Dbol. Thanks to Trenbolone, you can even lose some fat on this cycle.

Results
It’s a superb off-season stack for gaining plenty of mass and offsetting some of Dbol’s fluid retention. The Trenbolone side effects can be challenging to handle, so prepare to adjust your dosage if needed. You won’t get as much muscle definition and dryness as when using Tren on its own, but the increased size from Dianabol makes up for it – gains of 15 lbs and up of pure muscle are possible.
PCT
- Enclomiphene 25mg daily (3 weeks), 12.5mg daily (1 week)
- Nolvadex 20mg daily (3 weeks), 10mg daily (1 week)
Just like Deca, Tren can linger in your system for a prolonged length of time, and ongoing TRT or testosterone cruising is recommended if PCT isn’t effective.
Dianabol PCT
Your PCT following Dianabol use is going to strongly depend on what (if any) other AAS you’ve stacked it with. Since Dbol is often used in the first 4 to 6 weeks and then other AAS continue the cycle for many more weeks, you’ll be planning your PCT around the properties of those other compounds – this includes WHEN to start your PCT and what PCT compounds are most suitable.
For a basic or Dbol-only cycle, it can be beneficial to include HCG on-cycle taken twice weekly at 500iu (watch out for any increase in estrogenic side effects). PCT itself is best done with a combo of Enclomiphene and Nolvadex starting the day after your last Dianabol dose (remembering Dbol has a very short half-life). PCT for four weeks is usually sufficient at a dosage of:
- Enclomiphene: 25mg/day for the first three weeks, 12.5mg/day for the last one
- Nolvadex: 20mg/day for the first three weeks, 10mg/day for the last week
You want to do everything possible to get your PCT right so you can avoid disastrous low testosterone effects and keep those hard-earned gains.
Dianabol Side Effects
Dianabol is notorious for its high rate of aromatization and associated estrogenic activity. Water retention is a fact of life when you use Dianabol. This is part of what gets you gaining massive body weight so quickly, but you expect that some of it (or a lot) will be lost after you stop using Dbol.
Side Effects in Men
Common Dbol side effects in men may include:
Testosterone Suppression
While Dbol is suppressive, just as all AAS are, the fact it brings about enough conversion to estradiol means you can avoid the worst of suppression symptoms, and Dbol is a rare case of an AAS that can act as a testosterone base itself. This makes it possible to run a Dbol-only cycle without a testosterone base if you choose.
Liver Toxicity
Dianabol is very toxic to the liver, and a liver support supplement is necessary with this AAS. I recommend NAC (1g daily); a fish oil supplement is also helpful. These will NOT fully protect your liver by any means.
The intense stress on the liver caused by Dbol is the number one reason to limit its use to short cycles. Getting bloodwork done should be on your agenda so you can track those liver values and evaluate how your liver copes with different doses of Dianabol.
Water Retention
Dbol is famed for its ability to blow you up in more ways than one. That muscle fullness and size will be partially water, but just how much water you hold will depend significantly on your dose and diet.
Hint: Switching out simple carbs for complex carbs goes a long way to reducing water retention. Minimizing sodium (salt) intake also makes a difference.
A puffy face is a dead giveaway you’re using gear, and this is something Dianabol users can suffer with. Keeping your dose moderate can go a long way to avoiding excessive water retention.
Cholesterol
Dianabol can decrease your HDL and increase your LDL cholesterol levels. Since Dianabol users will often turn to an AI in an effort to control water retention and gyno, this can further worsen the effect on your cholesterol. Regular bloodwork is always recommended.
Gyno
Dbol can cause anything from mild to severe gyno, though not every user will suffer this problem. Using Aromisin or Arimidex is a standard procedure and should factor into your cycle planning.
Because Dianabol is so often used with moderate to high doses of testosterone, inexperienced users might think to blame Dianabol solely for the development of gyno symptoms – when it’s actually the higher testosterone dose causing the issue.
High Blood Pressure
If your water retention gets out of control, it can increase blood pressure. That’s why fluid retention should not be seen purely as an aesthetic annoyance – but one that’s also a health risk.
Androgenic Side Effects
Dianabol is not one of the most androgenic steroids, but hair loss and acne are undoubtedly possible. Some users find they develop severe acne – note these are highly individual side effects, and if another AAS has resulted in you suffering from acne or hair loss, then there’s a good chance Dbol will as well.
Sleep Apnea
Sleep apnea is a side effect that can develop due to rapid weight gain. This can leave you tired all day with poor quality sleep and negative impacts on your recovery.
Reduced Appetite
Some people find a reduction in appetite when using Dbol at higher doses. This is not what you want when gaining mass; the only solution in most cases is to drop the dose.
Female Side Effects
Females make use of Dianabol surprisingly frequently, but those who do risk virilizing side effects like body and facial hair growth, clitoral enlargement, a deeper voice, breast size reduction, and menstrual irregularities.
If you use a low dose of Dbol for short cycles (6 weeks or less), these side effects will generally subside after your cycle. However, longer-term use poses the risk of more permanent virilization changes for females.

Other countries are much more lenient and allow possession and use of Dianabol for personal use only – the UK and Canada are two leading examples of nations where you don’t have to be concerned with getting caught possessing small quantities of Dianabol.
In many countries, Dianabol is easily found without a prescription – Mexico is a famous example where many US residents look to source this and other anabolic steroids. Importing or mailing your AAS into the US from Mexico (or any other country) is not legal.
Dianabol (like all AAS) is banned and prohibited as a performance-enhancing substance on the world sporting stage and in competitions. Testing positive for Dianabol can see you disqualified or permanently expelled from competitions.
Typical Pricing
The great thing about Dianabol is how cheap it is. It’s probably the lowest-cost anabolic steroid you’ll ever buy. Why so cheap? It’s been around forever. It’s an oral tablet and immensely popular, so a constant supply is available.
Perhaps most famous is the Anabol brand (made by British Dispensary), which comes in 5mg tablets. You can find 1000 of these tablets for $100 or less. So, unlike other AAS, where costs will factor into your cycle planning, this isn’t the case with Dbol.

I am planning a second cycle; my first was long ago, when I was 19. It was injectables, and now I am 30. I am not looking for anything crazy; I want a little jump start if you know what I mean.
Ok, so I just changed my order from reading your advice and ordered Test E, Arimidex, Essentiale Forte as liver support and PTC combo; it’s a PTC 60 tablet pack with Tamoxifen Citrate 20mg; Clomiphene Citrate 50mg; Mesterolone 25mg; Tadalafil 7.5mg. Is that much better, and would it be possible to use Dbol and Var until I wait for my package to arrive, or do you have a better suggestion?
I’d run a Test/Dbol cycle if my goal is to put on mass or a Test/Anavar cycle if I want some clean gains, fat loss and energy.

I have 100x10mgs coming in, so I don’t know if it would be okay.
First get your test, then you can start your cycle. I’d say:
– week 1-12 – 300-500mg/week Test E
– week 1-8 – 60mg/day Anavar
